May 13th Boston, MA —
Today, Toby Leary, Chairman of the Civil Rights Coalition (CRC) released the following statement regarding Monday’s shooting incident on Memorial Drive in Cambridge:
“The public is fortunate that a licensed gun owner and former Marine was present and willing to act during this horrific incident. While law enforcement officers responded courageously and professionally, reports indicate that an armed citizen also stepped in to help stop an armed suspect who was allegedly firing at innocent people on a busy roadway.
Far too often, the media ignores examples where lawful gun ownership helps save lives or protect the public. This incident is a reminder that responsible, trained citizens can and do make a difference in moments of chaos and danger.
We are thankful for the bravery of the responding State Trooper and the Marine who reportedly placed himself in harm’s way to protect others. Their actions likely prevented even greater tragedy.
This incident also highlights the importance of protecting the constitutional rights of responsible citizens. Law-abiding gun owners are not the problem. In fact, they have proven to be part of the solution.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their families as they recover.”
